The materials used for making the jewelry depend on their availability and cultural differences. Though generally jewelry is a denotation of wealth, nowadays an upcoming form of jewelry is art jewelry which is of value because of the creativity and designs involved. Also, the costume jewelry is popular which is made of low cost materials and is of low price. One more form of jewelry is the wire sculpture or wrap jewelry in which, any material, from base metal wire with rock stones to precious metals with gemstones is used. Characteristically, jewelry is made by setting gemstones, coins, beads and other precious articles in metals. These metals may, along with gold, silver and platinum, include alloys of all metals, e.g. bronze. In the costume jewelry, sometimes stainless steel is also used. The precious gemstones used, are, diamonds, emerald, ruby, amber, amethyst, quartz, sapphire, turquoise, and so on. All these are originated either from earth or from trees. Some precious gemstones, like pearls and corals originate from animals. The gemstones originated from animals and trees are known as organic, and that originated from minerals or earth, are known as inorganic. Beads are often used in jewelry and they may be made from glass, metal, wood, clay, gemstones, shells etc. Beads are of various sizes. The goldsmiths, the silversmiths and the lapidaries make various kinds of jewelry. Jewelry making includes forging, casting and soldering of the metals and cutting and carving of the stones and cold-joining, i.e. assembling the different parts of the jewelry by adhesives. The making of jewelry comes under the term ‘functional art’ meaning, the art which can be worn or used. A jewelry designer is a professional who has been trained in metallurgy and designing and is the first person to take part in the process of jewelry making, in the sense, he decides what kind of jewelry item will be made from the given materials. The modern jewelry culture came into existence after the World War II, when an interest in artistic pursuit was renewed. There are jewelry articles to adorn almost all the parts of human body. For hair there are pins and fascinators, for head, crowns, like circlets and coronets, for ears, earrings and ear cuffs, for nose, nose rings, nose studs and nose chains, for teeth, grills, for neck, necklaces like chokers, for arms, armlets, for wrists, bracelets, cufflinks and bangles, for fingers, rings, for the body, body chains, breastplates and brooches, and for legs there are anklets and toe rings. To maintain the jewelry is an important task. It is essential to keep the jewelry articles clean and untarnished. Store them in their original packing or the jewelry box, neatly. Clean them with warm water, mild soap and some soft bristled instrument. To polish the jewelry items, use a soft cloth. Do not expose them to severe chemicals. Remember to take them off while doing household cleansing, taking sauna and doing any beauty treatment. Keep them away from beauty products such as hair spray, perfumes etc. Store and wear things like chains, bangles and earrings carefully not to cause surface damage. Regularly watch if there are any signs of wear and tear. Stud settings may become loose over a period, therefore be careful while using the studded jewelry. |
